Dear friends of Burma,
We would like to invite you to participate in ‘One Evening for Burma‘, an evening to support migrant and refugee youth from Burma.
For our friends in Seattle, Washington, USA, we hope you will join us for a very special night of food, fun, and information in support of Burma Study Center, a small non-profit organization with three branches in Thailand and Burma that provides free education and support services for young people from Burma. Join us from 6–10 p.m. to enjoy a mouth-watering buffet of Burmese dishes, music and dance performances by Karenni and Chin students from Northwest Communities of Burma who have recently resettled in the Seattle area, a presentation by Erika Berg, author of the soon-to-be-published book Forced To Flee: Visual Stories by Refugee Youth from Burma, and much more.
In addition, we are honored to have Simon Khin and Pwint Htun joining us to provide an overview about Burma and to answer questions about the current situation. You will have the opportunity to find out how you can make a lasting difference in the lives of vulnerable youth with incredible potential.
For those friends unable to join us in Seattle, we hope you will participate from afar by donating the amount that you would typically spend on a Saturday evening out with friends or family (or any amount) to support students of Burma Study Center and others who have been forced or compelled to leave their homes in Burma to seek a better, more peaceful life. Make your contribution in person at any of Burma Study Center’s three branches, or via PayPal (just select “Send” and enter the email address “donate@ burmastudy.org”. Enter a donation of any amount in any currency and click “Continue”. Login to your PayPal account or create a new account to use your credit card or PayPal funds to send a donation).
Other ways to participate include hosting a screening of a film or documentary about Burma for your friends and family, sharing a Burma-related book with your reading group, inviting a Burmese friend to share their memories and opinions about their home country with you and your network, or hosting your own fundraising dinner in your town or city! If you need suggestions or assistance, just send an email to info@burmastudy.org.
Our Goal: Raise $10,000 to enable Burma Study Center to continue coordinating education, social welfare, and action for positive change in Burma
What It Will Accomplish: This amount will enable Burma Study Center to expand its current capacity to offer free English and computer classes and health workshops for all migrants and refugees from Burma living in northern Thailand, as well as young people in Shan State and Sagaing Divison. The money raised will also enable the organization to acquire new educational resources and provide emergency assistance to refugees facing medical and personal emergencies through our “Compassionate Care Fund”.
Suggested Individual Donation (for attendance at Seattle event): $50–$100 per person
